In brief: Brazil’s retail sales rise after four monthly decreases

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its figures for the country’s retail sales in August, showing a monthly rise in sales volume of 0.2%. This comes after four consecutive monthly decreases, with a 0.2% drop in July, a 0.1% decrease in June, a 0.4% drop in May, and a 0.3% monthly decline in April. In year-on-year terms, sales in August were up 0.4% compared to August 2024, and the accumulated sales in the 12 months through August 2025 were up 2.2% on the previous 12-month period. Of the eight product categories measured by the Ibge, five saw monthly increases in sales in August this year. The greatest rises were registered in office supplies and information and communications products (+4.9%), clothing and footwear (+1.0%), and pharmaceutical, medical, and orthopaedic items and perfumes (+0.7%). The three categories that posted monthly sales decreases were fuels and lubricants (-0.6%), books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (-2.1%), and other personal and domestic items (-0.5%).
