MEXICO: Sheinbaum jubilant on first year mark

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum took to the main square, or Zócalo, in Mexico City (CDMX) on 5 October to commemorate her first full year in office and highlight the achievements of her government so far. While Sheinbaum remains very popular – evidenced by the huge crowds who attended the event – her first-year anniversary comes at a difficult time for her left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), with the emergence of two corruption scandals touching those in the cabinet of her political mentor, former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024). Sheinbaum appeared to dispel speculation that she may seize the opportunity to distance herself from López Obrador, praising the legacy he had bestowed her and signalling unity within the ruling party.
