In brief: Deflation picks up in Costa Rica

*Costa Rica’s national statistics institute (Inec) has released new figures showing that the country posted monthly deflation of -0.40% in September, bringing the year-on-year rate to -1.00%. This follows monthly deflation of -0.21% in August, when the year-on-year rate was -0.94%. An Inec press release highlights that the goods and services driving monthly deflation in September were mobile telephones (-8.92%), tomatoes (-30.42%), and flight tickets (-4.45%). Meanwhile the categories most contributing to monthly deflation were information and communication (-4.72%) and food and non-alcoholic drinks (-0.53%).
