*Colombia’s state oil company Ecopetrol has announced plans for a regasification project at the company’s port in Coveñas, Sucre department. This will be used to import and store liquefied natural gas (LNG), and according to an Ecopetrol statement will establish
“a strategic hub of natural gas on the north coast, with the aim of balancing energy supply and demand at the national level”. The announcement comes as Colombia is facing a pressing need to increase LNG imports amid the dwindling of the country’s domestic gas resources; according to a Bloomberg article published yesterday, Colombia currently has a 4% deficit in its gas demand, which could widen to as much as 20% in 2026. Ecopetrol’s president,
Ricardo Roa, said that
“this regasification project represents a key milestone in Colombia’s short-term energy security” and
“confirms Ecopetrol’s commitment to a reliable and efficient supply of natural gas, an essential energy source for family wellbeing, industrial competitiveness, and economic growth”.End of preview - This article contains approximately 156 words.
