In brief: More dollars kept outside Argentina’s financial system in Q2

*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released a report showing that Argentines kept US$269.38bn outside of the national financial system, in foreign bank accounts or “under the mattress”, in the second quarter of 2025. This is up US$2.65bn on the US$266.73bn recorded in the first quarter of the year. This comes despite a government programme launched in May to encourage Argentines to reincorporate US dollar savings into the financial system. The data comes from Indec’s quarterly report ‘Balance of payments, international investment position, and external debt’, which covers capital flows in the second quarter of this year. The figure takes into account funds held in safety deposit boxes, money in bank accounts declared abroad, and cash kept “under the mattress”, both in dollars and other currencies. The figure far outstrips the international reserves held by the central bank (BCRA), which totalled US$39.36bn as of 25 September, having been depleted in recent weeks by attempts to prop up the peso.
