*Brazilian airline Gol has announced that it has ceased its
negotiations for a merger with Azul, another leading player in the domestic aviation sector. The airlines signed a memorandum of understanding in January this year in which they committed to begin negotiating a potential merger. Since Gol and Azul are Brazil’s second and third largest airlines respectively, behind Latam, a merger would have created a new company that could have dominated the domestic market. However, in May Azul filed for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US. Azul has declared its intention to focus on its Chapter 11 proceedings and notified Gol that it will be
“terminating discussions” for a possible transaction.
