Costa Rica’s President Rodrigo Chaves survived. The opposition-controlled 57-member legislative assembly voted on 22 September not to strip him of his immunity from prosecution in order to be investigated over alleged corruption in relation to a case involving the alleged misappropriation of funds from the Central American Development Bank (Cabei) [WR-25-31]. The motion to strip Chaves of his immunity - the first such request to be made in relation to a sitting president in Costa Rica - came four short of the requisite two-thirds majority of 38 votes. The vote provides a boost for Chaves and his right-of-centre ‘Chavismo’ movement as the country is gearing up for general elections in February 2026.
