In brief: IDB announces loan to modernise Peru’s prison system
*The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has signed off on a US$177m loan to strengthen Peru’s prison system. The funds are aimed at modernising prison system management, professionalising staff, and expanding rehabilitation, educational, employment, and treatment programmes. The IDB says this could reduce the reincarceration rate from 24% to 21% by 2030. President Dina Boluarte’s government is attempting a tough crackdown on organised crime and views investment in the prison network as a key priority.
