*Colombia’s President
Gustavo Petro has appointed
Carina Murcía Yela as acting information and communications technology (ICT) minister, following the resignation yesterday of her predecessor
Julián Molina. The departure of Molina, who had been in the role since March, may be the first move in a cabinet reshuffle that the Colombian media reports is being planned in response to a perceived betrayal by the government’s allies in congress. This relates to a 3 September vote in which senators rejected Petro’s pick for a constitutional court justice,
María Patricia Balanta, and instead opted for former human rights ombudsman
Carlos Camargo (2020-2024). Those senators who voted for Camargo included many from the centrist Alianza Verde (AV) and the centre-left Partido Liberal (PL), which have ministerial representation in Petro’s cabinet. Petro responded to the vote by saying that
“the government’s coalition in the senate will be completely remade” as
“its objectives have changed”. Molina, of the right-wing Partido de la U (PU), had been one of the few bridges between the Petro administration and conservatives in congress.
