Ricaurte Vásquez, has announced that the government is planning to present its new pipeline project for the Panama Canal before investors on 18 September. He made the announcement on the sidelines of Inside LatAm: Panamá 2025, a forum organised by international credit ratings agency Moody’s. President
José Raúl Mulino announced the launch of a process to develop the new gas pipeline on 3 September during his visit to Japan. According to Panama’s presidency, the initiative, which is in line with the Panama Canal’s revenue diversification strategy, is one of the most significant infrastructure projects for the Canal since the expansion of the third set of locks which was completed in 2016. According to the ACP the initiative will create over 6,500 jobs during the construction stage and nearly 9,600 in the operational phase. It will provide average annual revenue for the State of approximately US$160m during construction and of over US$1.5bn during operation. The formal launch of the concessionaire selection process will include: a pre-qualification stage for interested parties; an interaction and dialogue stage with the pre-qualified parties; and a final stage for the selection of the concessionaire. The ACP said that the pre-qualification of interested parties will begin this year, while the final concessionaire selection stage is scheduled to close in the fourth quarter of 2026.
