Sheinbaum delivers triumphant Informe despite challenges ahead

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum gave her first annual state-of-the-nation report or ‘Informe’ on 1 September. Delivered 11 months after Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, the Informe came at an important time for the president and the Fourth Transformation (4T) political project she now leads. The same day, the new, directly elected supreme court (SCJN) took up its seats, signifying the successful completion of the judicial reform first promoted by Sheinbaum’s predecessor and mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), which she faithfully pursued. The Informe also came ahead of a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Sheinbaum heralded US relations as one of the major achievements of her term so far in the Informe, with Rubio’s visit providing an early test for the optimistic tilt of the report, which glossed over several complex challenges, chief among them insecurity.
