*Bolivia’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the consumer price index for August, putting monthly inflation at 1.01%, down from 1.20% in July. This brought annual inflation to 24.15% in August, down from 24.86% the previous month. The INE’s director,
Humberto Arandia, was cited by state news agency ABI as saying that inflation in August was driven by price rises for chicken, due to shortages of diesel, and paper products, due to increased demand at the start of the school term. Arandia noted that this was the second consecutive month of falling monthly inflation,
which peaked in June at 5.21%. He said that this was
“significant” as it suggests that the surge in inflation earlier this year was due to social conflicts – a reference to
the roadblocks that were installed around the country by supporters of former president
Evo Morales (2006-2019).
