*Panama’s President
José Raúl Mulino has met his Brazilian counterpart
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the Planalto presidential palace in Brasília during a visit to Brazil. Lula was accompanied by various ministers including
Mauro Vieira (foreign relations),
Fernando Haddad (finance),
Silvio Costa Filho (ports and airports), and
Irajá Lacerda (acting minister for agriculture and livestock). Mulino was accompanied by ministers including
Javier Martínez-Acha (foreign relations),
Julio Moltó (trade and industry),
Roberto Linares (agricultural development), and
José Ramón Icaza (Canal affairs). According to a press release by Panama’s presidency, the delegations signed two memoranda of understanding. One was between the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and Brazil’s ministry of ports and airports which commits the two sides to undertaking joint initiatives to maintain cooperation aimed at promoting the exchange of information and experiences relevant to the management of ports as well as maritime and fluvial transport logistics. The other was between Panama’s agriculture development ministry and Brazil’s agriculture and livestock ministry and seeks to stimulate broad development in the areas of agriculture and livestock systems. It focuses on the exchange of information, experiences and agricultural inputs among other things. The meeting also produced the announcement that Brazil would sign up to the Panama Canal Neutrality Treaty as well as the agreement that Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer would sell four A-29 Super Tucano to Panama’s national aeronaval service (Senan) to be used for coastal patrols to combat drug trafficking and organised crime in Panama.
