*Brazil’s government has announced that it will purchase seven food products that have been directly impacted by the US tariffs which took effect on 6 August. The items include açaí berries, grapes, coconut water, honey, mangoes, fish, and chestnuts. According to a government press release, these foods can be acquired by institutions such as public schools, universities, and hospitals, and the armed forces, without the need for an official procurement process. Facilitating local procurement was one of the measures announced by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on 13 August, when he launched the ‘Plano Brasil Soberano’ (Sovereign Brazil Plan), a series of measures aiming to mitigate the impacts of the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
