In brief: Chinese carmaker GWM opens new plant in Brazil

*Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has attended the launch event for a new factory opened by Chinese car manufacturer Great Wall Motor (GWM) in the municipality of Iracemápolis, São Paulo state. The plant is reportedly GWM’s first factory in South America and its third outside of China with a full production base. Its other such overseas production facilities are in Russia and Thailand. The initial production capacity for the Iracemápolis plant is estimated at 30,000 vehicles per year. By 2026 the carmaker expects this to rise to 50,000 vehicles. The opening of the GWM plant comes amid the Lula administration’s efforts to shore up ties with China as well as boost the local industrial sector. Another major Chinese carmaker, BYD, has been trying to open a new factory in Bahia state, but the launch has been delayed due to legal obstacles, with accusations of workers’ rights violations.
