In brief: Mexico reports drop in poverty rates

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has announced that 38.5m people in Mexico were living in multidimensional poverty, which takes into account income, services, housing, employment, and education, in 2024. According to Inegi, this represents a drop of 8.3m people compared to 2022, when 46.8m people were living in multidimensional poverty. Inegi stated that in 2024, the population living in multidimensional poverty was 29.6%, meaning three out of ten people were not guaranteed the exercise of at least one of their social rights, such as education, health, social security, housing, and food, and their monthly income per person was not sufficient to purchase a basket of food, goods, or necessary services. The same report states that 7m people were living in extreme poverty last year, down from 9.1m in 2022. This was the first time that Inegi measured poverty rates, after it took over the functions of the now-defunct national council for the evaluation of social development policy (Coneval), which was dissolved as part of a reform passed in November 2024 abolishing several autonomous bodies and regulatory agencies.
