In brief: Panama secures Japanese loan for metro line

*Panama’s foreign minister, Javier Martínez-Acha, has signed an exchange of notes with Japan’s ambassador to Panama, Matsunaga Kazuyoshi, for a US$2.49bn loan to fund line 3 of the Panama City metro. A statement by Panama’s foreign ministry (Mire) highlights that the loan has a favourable repayment period of 14 years, a six-year grace period, and low interest rates. The project, which is currently under construction, is being developed in two phases. The first, which spans 25km and comprises 11 stations, begins at Albrook station, an existing station in Panamá district in the eponymous province, and will end at the Ciudad del Futuro complex in Arraiján district, Panamá Oeste province. The second phase of the project will extend the line to La Chorrera district (Panamá Oeste).
