Bolsonaro placed under house arrest for breaching social media ban

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) has been placed under house arrest for violating the restrictions that were imposed on him on 18 July [WR-25-29], which included a ban on posting content on social media, either on his own account or through those of other people. In the short term, the arrest could strengthen the far-right narrative claiming that Bolsonaro is being silenced and persecuted by the supreme court (STF), but in the medium term it could also be argued that the arrest has dealt a blow to the ‘Bolsonarismo’ movement, with its main figurehead unable to make public appearances and engage his support base.
