Brazil, where the federal oil regulator (ANP) held an auction in June for oil exploration concessions, some of which were in the ecologically sensitive waters near the mouth of the Amazon River. The offshore blocks along Brazil’s northern coasts are considered to have the highest potential to boost the country’s oil reserves, but critics say investing in fossil fuels will taint the country’s green credentials as it prepares to host the United Nations climate change conference (COP30) in the Amazonian city of Belém in November.
