Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has announced R$1.4bn (US$250m) in funding for the ‘Ferrovia Transnordestina’ railway. The project was first launched in 2006, during Lula’s previous time in office (2003-2011), but faced years of delays, with only 280km of the over 1200km of the railway completed. During a visit on 18 July to a section of the railway in the state of Ceará, Lula described the project as a key initiative to boost the economy of the northeast region and said that the railway is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The railway will run through 53 municipalities across three states – Piauí, Pernambuco, and Ceará, connecting the municipality of Eliseu Martins in Piauí state to the port of Pecém in Ceará.
