*Argentina’s government led by President
Javier Milei has filed an emergency appeal against
a 30 June US court ruling for the Argentine state to hand over its 51% stake in the state-controlled energy company YPF, to partially satisfy a US$16.1bn compensation payment it was ordered to make in 2023 to minority shareholders affected by YPF’s nationalisation. The government has asked for a delay in the turnover of the stake, which the court ordered to be done by 14 July, while its appeal is heard. Milei had announced his intention to appeal the ruling on 30 June, blaming the situation on
Axel Kicillof, the current Peronist governor of the province of Buenos Aires who was serving as economy minister (2013-2015), in the government of former president
Cristina Fernández (2007-2015) at the time of YPF’s nationalisation.
