An apparent plot by Colombia’s former foreign minister Álvaro Leyva (2022-2024) to topple President Gustavo Petro has kicked up a diplomatic storm after Petro demanded that US authorities investigate whether any officials were involved in planning a “coup” against him. In response, on 3 July the US State Department recalled its chargé d’affaires in Bogotá, John McNamara, in protest at Petro’s “reprehensible” comments and warned that there would be further consequences.
