In brief: Argentina and India boost ties

*India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has met Argentina’s President Javier Milei during a visit to Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires, ahead of his participation in the Brazil-hosted summit of the Brics group, which comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, before expanding its membership in recent years. Social media posts by Modi following the meeting with Milei declared it “excellent”, with the two marking 75 years of India-Argentina diplomatic relations, and five years since the relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership. Modi said the two leaders discussed “ways to diversify trade ties, cooperation in agriculture, defence, security, energy and more”, adding that there is “immense scope in areas like pharmaceuticals and sports as well.” Milei was accompanied by Karina Milei, his sister and secretary of the presidency, along with his foreign minister, Gerardo Werthein, his health minister, Mario Lugones, and the minister for deregulation and transformation of the state, Federico Sturzenegger, among others. Modi was accompanied by his foreign minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and India’s ambassador to Argentina, Ajaneesh Kumar, among others. Meetings in recent months between representatives from both countries have discussed ways of boosting energy collaboration in areas of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and rare earth minerals. In January 2025 Argentina’s state oil company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF) announced it had signed a memorandum of understanding with three Indian state-owned companies, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC), Gas Authority of India Ltd (Gail), and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Videsh Ltd (OVL) to work on an agreement that could lead to exporting up to a combined 10m tonnes per year of LNG to these buyers.
