Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (1990-1997), the first democratically elected female president of Nicaragua, and indeed the Americas, has passed away at the age of 95. Chamorro was living in exile in the Costa Rican capital San José at the time of her death with two of her children, Cristiana and Carlos Fernando, who were hounded out of the country by the authoritarian government led by co-presidents Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. While Chamorro died of natural causes, another exiled critic of the Ortega-Murillo regime died at the hands of a hitman days later in San José.
