The onset of summer has set alarm bells ringing within the Cuban government. A hotter-than-expected summer could cause widespread power cuts, which, in turn, could trigger popular unrest. President Miguel Díaz-Canel cautioned that the current power situation is “critical”. Electricity supply at peak time on midsummer stood at just 1,820MW, barely half the demand of 3,500MW. There were reports in some areas of 20-hour power cuts.
