Economic overview

The Chinese government reported that trade with Cuba in the first half of 2006 increased by 80% to US$890m. This is already significantly more than the total trade between the two countries in 2005, which came to US$830m. The Chinese ambassador to Cuba, Zhao Rongxian, said that Cuba was now an important destination for Chinese tourists and businessmen. Cuba has traditionally had cool relations with China, despite being the first Latin American country to recognise China in 1960. Cuba's problem with China was the difficult relations the USSR had with China. The USSR was Cuba's main ally and economic support until 1989.
