The future of the US Palmerola airbase in the department of Comayagua, north of Tegucigalpa, looks uncertain. Back in June President George W. Bush told his Honduran counterpart Manuel Zelaya that Palmerola could be turned into a commercial airport and that the US would help fund the construction of another military base for the purpose of counter-narcotics operations. The two men met again in Washington on 18 September to continue discussions.
