Claudia Sheinbaum has threatened countermeasures if the 50% US tariffs on steel and aluminium products
recently announced by US President
Donald Trump remain in place. In a press conference President Sheinbaum described the decision to double the 25% tariffs as “
unfair” and “
unsustainable”, highlighting that Mexico imports more steel and aluminium from the US than it exports. Sheinbaum added that the tariffs lacked
“legal substance” given the existence of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade agreement. She said that Mexico would continue efforts to reach an agreement with the US, with Mexico’s Economy Minister
Marcelo Ebrard due to hold talks with top US officials in Washington tomorrow (6 June) in a bid to exclude Mexico from these tariffs. Sheinbaum said that if an agreement could not be reached, “
some measures” would be announced to “
guarantee the protection of the steel and aluminium industries” in Mexico as well as jobs created by these industries.
