Water scarcity in Mexico’s northern states has become an increasing issue in recent years due to consistently drier and hotter weather. Now, the lack of water is causing friction with the US administration of President Donald Trump, as Mexico is failing to live up to commitments made under a 1944 water sharing treaty. On 10 April Trump escalated long-running tensions around the treaty, threatening to impose tariffs and sanctions on Mexico if it failed to honour its terms. President Claudia Sheinbaum put a brave face on the dispute, stating an agreement would be reached and rejecting possibilities of the dispute escalating. Her predictions proved correct, with the US and Mexico reaching an agreement on 28 April.
