We begin this May 2025 edition of the
Latin American Regional Report: Mexico by looking at debates around ‘narcocorridos’, a sub-genre of the traditional Mexican corrido musical genre, that have intensified following two high-profile incidents at concerts in the states of Jalisco and Estado de México (Edomex). Critics of the genre say it glorifies Mexico’s drug cartels, while proponents argue the songs speak to the reality of life in Mexico following its failed wars on drugs. On 11 April Jalisco state government became the latest authority to introduce measures to ban or place limitations on the genre, in what is fast becoming a debate around freedom of expression and the limits of state censorship.
