MEXICO: Suspicious new action against López Obrador

The Fox administration has left itself open to a new round of charges that it is manipulating the judicial process for electoral gain: the chief prosecutor's office, the PGR, announced last week that it will be seeking the lifting of the immunity enjoyed by Mexico City mayor Andrés Manuel López Obrador, so it can prosecute him for disobeying a court injunction. Because congress is unlikely to start acting on this before September, the effects of this move will hang over five of the 14 state elections due this year.
