Artificial intelligence (AI) can be described as the next big thing, the technology most likely to drive comprehensive and far-reaching change across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) during the coming decade. Along with other technologies and concepts, including the digital revolution, net carbon zero, and the energy transition, the AI concept was first developed in the wealthier countries of the ‘global north’ rippling out from there to impact the ‘global south’ – developing nations including those in LAC. As with previous innovations, much of the discussion revolves around the ability of different countries to capture the beneficial effects of AI while minimising the potential harms it may unleash. There is also justified concern over whether economies closer to the periphery can avoid getting left behind, or see their people being trapped on the wrong side of the digital divide.End of preview - This article contains approximately 254 words.
