Debates around ‘narcocorridos’, a sub-genre of the traditional Mexican corrido musical genre, have intensified in recent weeks, following two high-profile incidents at concerts in the states of Jalisco and Estado de México (Edomex). Critics of the genre and related musical styles such as corridos tumbados say the songs glorify Mexico’s drug cartels and the violence they generate, while proponents argue the songs speak to the reality of life in Mexico following its failed wars on drugs.
