BRAZIL: Tighter rules for police in Rio favelas
Brazil’s supreme court (STF) has concluded a high-profile case commonly known as the ‘ADPF das Favelas’. The court decided to partially approve a plan submitted by the Rio de Janeiro state government which proposes measures to reduce the risk of police brutality during operations conducted by the state police in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro city. The court’s decision has been met with cautious optimism by rights groups, such as Brazilian NGO Conectas Direitos Humanos, which has nevertheless expressed criticism of parts of the ruling.
