Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa scored a thumping re-election victory on 13 April that was due in no small part to his hardline stance against criminal gangs. Homicide rates dropped sharply in the months after Noboa declared war on organised crime in January 2024. However, the latest statistics from the interior ministry show a sharp rise in murders in recent months, indicating that the impact of the government’s emergency measures may have been short-lived.
