In brief: Brazil’s unemployment continues to rise

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures on national unemployment, which put the jobless rate at 7.0% in the first quarter of 2025, corresponding to 7.7m unemployed people. This marks a year-on-year drop from the 7.9% unemployment registered by the Ibge for Q1 last year. However, the unemployment rate has been ticking up since the latter months of 2024. The Q4 2025 unemployment rate stood at 6.2%, before rising to 6.5% in the rolling quarter of November 2024-January 2025, and up to 6.8% in the rolling quarter of December 2024-February 2025. Despite the continuation of the quarterly increases in unemployment, the Ibge suggested in a press release that this is a seasonal rise in unemployment that has not compromised the strength of the labour market, highlighting that the latest figure of 7.0% is lower than the jobless rates registered for Q1 in recent years.
