Ecuador: On 16 April US Secretary of State
Marco Rubio spoke with Ecuador’s President
Daniel Noboa to congratulate him on
his re-election in the 13 April vote. According to a readout posted by the US Department of State, the two discussed accelerating the countries’ “
partnership to advance U.S. national security and mutual priorities”, and Rubio commended the Ecuadorean people “
on a free and fair election and carrying out a transparent, democratic, and peaceful electoral process”. The US Department of State readout cites Rubio as highlighting the two countries’ “
shared commitment to protecting citizens of both countries by countering narcoterrorists, transnational criminal organizations, illegal immigration, drugs and malign foreign influence in our hemisphere”. According to the same source, Rubio and Noboa also “
discussed economic growth in both countries and strategized to address regional challenges such as in Haiti and Venezuela”. The talks follow signs of closer Ecuador-US cooperation
with regard to security, while ahead of his re-election, on 1 April, President Noboa
met with US President
Donald Trump to discuss various issues including
security and migration.
