*Bolivia’s education minister,
Omar Veliz, has said that President
Luis Arce’s government is advancing with negotiations with the teachers’ union Confederación de Trabajadores de Educación Urbana de Bolivia (CTEUB), following protests which reportedly saw the police fire tear gas on 21 April at teachers in La Paz. Veliz said that some of the union’s demands, such as full salary pensions, are
“not reasonable or sustainable” and also rejected calls for automatic promotions. However, he said that the government was
“gradually meeting the demands” of the sector and highlighted the Arce administration’s moves to boost teacher numbers for subjects such as physics and chemistry.
