In brief: Venezuela claims rising oil production despite sanctions

*The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) has published its latest monthly oil market report, in which Venezuela claimed to have produced 1.05m barrels of crude per day (bpd) in March, up from 1.03m in February. Opec’s own estimate, based on secondary sources, put Venezuelan oil production in March at 911,000 bpd, down slightly from 912,000 in February. The oil sector remains under significant pressure from the government of US President Donald Trump, which has ordered US oil firm Chevron to cease its activities in Venezuela and threatened tariffs of 25% on countries that purchase Venezuelan oil.
