Nightclub disaster. President Luis Abinader decreed three days of national mourning on 8 April after the roof of a nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed claiming over 200 lives. The Jet Set disco in the Dominican capital had been hosting a concert by the popular Dominican merengue musician Rubby Pérez, who was one of the fatalities. The death toll has been steadily mounting, with Dominican authorities confirming on 10 April that it had reached 218 people. Rescue operations are continuing, although the presidential spokesperson Homero Figueroa said in a statement that the “search and rescue phase” had transitioned to “a recovery of the bodies phase”.
