*Venezuela’s main opposition coalition, Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD), has criticised a decree signed by President
Nicolás Maduro on 8 April which declared an
economic emergency. The PUD said that the decree, which enables Maduro to alter economic and fiscal policy with little oversight for a period of 60 days,
“does not resolve the national crisis and seeks to arbitrarily concentrate even more power, without real solutions for the Venezuelan people”. Criticising Maduro for failing to articulate any plan to bring down inflation or raise household incomes, the PUD warned that the decree
“opens the door to abuses and favouritism, taking Venezuela further from what it needs: legitimate institutions, transparent politics, and an economic model that boosts production, employment, and wellbeing”.End of preview - This article contains approximately 120 words.
