Luis Abinader has revealed that the country’s emergency operations centre (COE) is coordinating over 22 institutions as part of a rescue operation following the collapse of the roof of the iconic Jet Set nightclub in the capital, Santo Domingo. Official estimates put the death toll at least 79, with a further 155 people sent to various health centres for medical attention, although the media is reporting that at least 98 were killed, with the death toll expected to rise. Rubby Pérez who was performing, according to media reports, along with
Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province and the sister of
Nelson Cruz, a former US Major League Baseball (MLB) star, as well as another former MLB player,
Octavio Dotel. Investigations are underway into the causes of the roof’s collapse.
