MEXICO: Mass extradition seeks to appease US

Rafael Caro Quintero, one of Mexico’s most famous drug kingpins, may face the death penalty in the US, according to comments made by federal prosecutors on 26 March. Caro Quintero has long been a top target of US law enforcement agencies due to his suspected involvement in the murder of US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent Enrique ‘Kiki’ Camarena in 1985. He was handed over to the US authorities on 27 February in a mass extradition of alleged drug cartel members as President Claudia Sheinbaum works to demonstrate her government’s commitment to combatting cartels to US President Donald Trump. Although Caro Quintero was arguably the most significant figure in the handover, many other high-profile names featured.
