In brief: Brazil’s job creation up in February

*Brazil’s labour ministry has released the latest figures from its national employment registry (Novo Caged) which showed a net 431,995 new jobs created in February. A total of 2.58m new hires were registered in February this year, while dismissals totalled 2.15m. This latest net rise in jobs marks an increase from the net 144,086 jobs in January and 307,544 jobs in February last year. In a press release, the ministry highlighted that this latest figure is the highest monthly job creation figure registered since 2020. However, despite the strong figures for job creation in February, the national statistics institute (Ibge) has released new figures showing that unemployment has been ticking up in recent months. The latest Ibge data shows that the national unemployment rate stood at 6.8% in the rolling quarter of December 2024-February 2025, up from the 6.1% rate registered for September-November 2024, although this is still lower than the 7.8% unemployment in December 2023-February 2024.
