Latin American Regional Report: Mexico begins by looking at the US State Department’s designation of six Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organisations (FTOs). There are concerns in Mexico that the designation could be used as a potential justification for US military intervention. Although the designation does not expressly allow the US government to carry out military strikes in Mexico without its consent, it undoubtedly signals a hardening of US rhetoric towards Mexico’s cartels and will pile more pressure on President Claudia Sheinbaum to prove her government is taking the fight against them seriously.
