The plaudits for Mexico’s efforts to stem the flow of illegal migrants and drug trafficking keep coming from senior US officials. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview with the US TV channel Fox News on 13 March that cooperation with Mexico had improved, with concrete results on migration but called for yet more progress against drugs. Five days later, the director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Kash Patel, praised Mexico’s cooperation in capturing a leader of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) street gang, of US origin but roots in El Salvador, on the FBI’s ‘ten most wanted’ list.
