Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that the state electricity company, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) will maintain M$100bn (US$4.96bn) in subsidies and expand solar panel installations in homes to address rising electricity demand during the hot season.
“It is a very significant amount, and it will continue to be granted in the same way as before,” Sheinbaum stated in her daily morning press conference. Sheinbaum revealed plans for a solar panel programme in Mexicali, the capital of Baja California state, which she said is the country’s hottest city with the greatest air conditioning use. The initiative targets medium- and low-consumption homes with high electricity rates, aiming to cut costs through renewable energy. The government is also working to reduce energy consumption without affecting users by replacing outdated air conditioners and appliances. The CFE reaffirmed its commitment on social media, stating that:
“The CFE will continue providing subsidies to ensure fair electricity rates for Mexicans during this hot season.” Mexico experienced widespread blackouts
in May 2024 during an unprecedented heatwave, sparking calls for greater investment in the electricity sector and the expansion of the generation capacity of renewable energy.
