In brief: Industrial production declines in Mexico

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has reported a 2.8% year-on-year decrease in industrial activity for January 2025. In monthly terms, Inegi’s index of industrial activity (Imai) decreased by 0.4% as compared to December 2024. This follows a monthly drop of 1.4% in December, when the Imai was down 2.4% in yearly terms. The monthly decrease in January was driven by a 1.8% drop in mining while utilities (electricity generation and transmission, provision of water and gas) was down 0.8% and manufacturing by 0.3%. In contrast, construction saw a slight increase of 0.1%. In year-on-year terms, mining dropped by 8.6%, construction by 6.4%, and manufacturing decreased by 0.9% while utilities increased by 1.0%.
