In brief: Mexico gov’t on defensive over Vulcan Materials dispute

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has said that she will send a letter to US legislators in response to a request they made in a letter dated 7 March for US President Donald Trump to “demand a resolution” for US construction firm Vulcan Materials which owns a deep-water port and limestone quarry (Calica) in Mexico’s Quintana Roo state. The quarry was shut down in May 2022 under Sheinbaum’s mentor and predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) by the ministry for the environment and natural resources (Semarnat), citing environmental damage. A post on social media by US Representative August Pfluger (R-TX), who led the 35 legislators calling for action from Trump, urged him to demand a resolution as “he continues trade discussions with Mexico”. In a bulletin Sheinbaum reiterated that the land in question had not been expropriated but declared a nature reserve.
