*Leslie Voltaire, the president of Haiti’s transitional presidential council (TPC), has confirmed the launch of international services at the Antoine Simon international airport in Les Cayes, the capital of Sud department in the south-west of the country. The airport first opened in 2005 under the late former prime minister Gérard Latortue (2004-2006) but has been closed since 2013 for renovation and expansion works. It becomes Haiti’s third international airport after Cap-Haïtien in the eponymous city (Nord department) and Toussaint Louverture International Airport in the capital, Port-au-Prince. The Toussaint Louverture airport reopened in December 2024 having been closed after gang attacks targeted aircraft from US-based airlines JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, and American Airlines, prompting the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue a ban on civil aviation flights into Haiti which was extended until 12 March 2025. Writing on social media Voltaire said that the opening of the Antoine Simon airport to international flights would boost tourism and economic opportunities for the south of the country.
